Day 49!

Hey my beloved family and friends!

I need to apologize because I wrote up a giant email that was
beautiful and had a good message in it, only to find out that it
didn't send. So dumb. Also, it was deleted too so I couldn't send it
at all. Sooo, yes I am still alive! I am in Texas! Barely. My first
area is on the border in Del Rio. Mexico is like 2 miles away from my
house. Lol it's great. It's funny driving and thinking, wow I can see
Mexico. Everything is so flat here! No mountains! I don't know how I
feel about it. Haha

My first day was great! Well it was mostly driving because it's a 4
hour drive from San Antonio. But we got right to work. We met a guy
who goes by Chendo. This guy is quite the character. He fits the
description of a cholo quite perfectly, but it's great, he's so nice.

My companion is Elder Niebergall from Ogden Utah. He's a cool guy and
we get along. He is just weird enough that it's good. He has been out
for 18 months and this is the first Spanish area he's been in his
whole mission! So yep, that probably means that I willing get my fair
share of English speaking areas as well.

The other day we thought we were going by an inactive member's house,
so we knocked on the door and this guy was so excited to see us. Turns
out he wasn't a member, but his name is Ricardo and he doesn't get out
much so he took his opportunity to talk. He told just about his whole
life story and kept talking for about an hour. He was hilarious and
loves music. He had a guitar, but didn't really know how to play it
well, so we made a deal with him. We are gonna go over to his place
and I will teach him how to play the guitar, then we will share a
lesson with him. It's perfect! This guy is awesome and already
considers himself to be really blessed by God, so he could be going
places.

Yesterday we were biking around and area and we stopped to find some
people. As we were about to leave, this guy walks up to us and says "I
want to learn more about Jesus Christ." ... Perfect investigator! Haha
it was so funny, but amazing! We gave him a short lesson of the
restoration and he accepted baptism in 3 weeks (potentially). This guy
was ready. Haha I love it.

And yes, it is hot. So hot. It's about 100 every day and pretty
humid.. And it's only June! Haha, but honestly it doesn't even feel
that bad. Even biking isn't a big deal. I don't sweat as much as I
thought I would. And my bike is amazing and has killer shocks.😁 oh! I
live in a house with another set of elders and guess what?! We have a
pool in the back yard! It's amazing and relaxing and definitely empty.
But it's still there so that's neat.

Anyway, the mission has finally begun and it's off to a good start. I
love you all a whole lot. Thanks for everything!😊 adios!

Elder Thorkelson
